Drinking Water Contaminants

Pure and clean water is essential for our well-being. It activates and stimulates the body's systems and affects every aspect of our vitality and healthiness. Clean and unpolluted water has a neutral pH level and is a necessary agent for optimal life; it is a fundamental health requirement, as contaminated water causes a variety of sickness and disease.

Unfortunately, we have to observe a worrying development: the contamination of drinking water is increasing at an alarming rate. Pure water doesn't exist anymore, even in nature, since hundreds of known toxic substances contaminate our water. Unfortunately governments around the world fail to enforce existing water treatment regulations.

According to a report by the American Academy of Microbiology, our drinking water is threatened by an increasing variety and virility of hazardous substances. The questions we have to face are now, "What are the contaminants in my water, and what are their concentration levels?"

Contaminants found in Tap Water

Chlorine and THM's: Added to most municipal & city water supplies, this disinfectant hardens arteries, irritates skin and sinus conditions, destroys proteins in the body, and aggravates asthma, allergies and respiratory problems. Studies have shown that chlorine reacts with organic material (e.g. humus, algae) in water to form chemicals called Trihalomethanes (THMs). One of these THMs is chloroform, a suspected cancer-causing agent.

Lead: The EPA states that lead in drinking water can cause serious health problems. At low levels it can reduce birth weight and premature birth, delay mental and physical development, and impaired mental abilities may result. At high levels of exposure, anemia and kidney damage can occur.

Pesticides and Herbicides: Many pesticides are toxic and are associated with a variety of health problems. Agricultural chemicals like atrazine and alachlor have found their way into groundwater sources.

Radon: Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that has no taste, odor, or color. Waterborne radon released from showers, washing machines, etc. is inhaled and can increase the risk of lung cancer. A few years ago The Environmental Working Group, a nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C., conducted a survey and found that 19 million taps containing radon above levels it considers safe.

Fluoride: Fluoride is another dangerous additive found in municipal water. It is a corrosive toxin that creates serious effects on a long range basis and has been found to increase the uptake of aluminum into the brain and lead into the blood. It accumulates in the bones, making them brittle and fractural. While Fluoride is said to damage tooth enamel and may even lower fertility rates, it inhibits antibodies from forming in the blood as well. The increasing growth rate of tumors in people prone to cancer can also be traced back to Fluoride, since it confuses the immune system, causing it to attack the body's tissues.

Chloroform: When chlorine reacts with the organic matter already present in water (humus, the organic material formed from plant decay), toxic by-products such as Chloroform are formed. This by-product of chlorination is a known carcinogen and causes normal cells to mutate, excessive free-radical formation (accelerated aging) and cholesterol to oxidize.

Industrial Chemicals: Many industrial chemicals may cause increased risk of cancer and others illnesses. Some of the industrial chemicals now threatening the purity and safeness of our drinking water include polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polynuclear aromatics (PNAs), and volatile organic chemicals (VOCs), such as carbon tetrachloride, TCE and benzene.

Parasites: Parasites such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia in drinking water can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and flu-like symptoms that are more weakening than most cases of flu.

DCA (Dichloro acedic acid): This chlorine by-product alters cholesterol metabolism and has been shown to cause liver cancer in lab animals.

MX: MX is another chlorinated acid and by-product of chlorination. It has been found in all chlorinated water for which it was tested and is known to cause genetic mutations that can lead to cancer growth.

Cysts: Giardia and Cryptosporidium are protozoan parasites, which can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and flu-like symptoms.

Disease-carrying bacteria and viruses: They can trigger immediate gastrointestinal upset - diarrhea, cramping and vomiting. These symptoms are so common we often dismiss them as flu or a cold.

When evaluating these disconcerting facts, proper water filtration and purification systems should be taken into serious consideration. Filtering the entire water supply at home through a whole home, point-of-entry purification system could be a good start, and even could be essential if the risks described should be avoided.

The smart option to ensure health and wellness is to purify the water at home with an affordable water filtration and purification system that removes all contaminants, biological sediments, chemicals, metals etc. at every faucet and shower head both inside and outside the house.
