When considering to purchase a Water Filter for home use, there is another important issue to look at beforehand: "Do I want to have filtered water at only one or all faucets in my home?"
Two main water treatment categories of water filtration and water purification systems for domestic use and efficient drinking water filtration are available on the market, being Point-of-Use (POU) systems, connected to only one faucet in your home (typically the kitchen faucet), and Point-of-Entry (POE) systems, or Whole Home Systems, which are being installed at the point where your main water source enters your home, supplying every faucet with fresh water.
POU-Systems:
Point of Use water filtration systems treat and filter water only at the location of its use (for drinking, cooking, beverage preparation), e.g. at the kitchen sink, and filter the water at exactly that one point. These systems, also known as counter top water filters, are the least expensive types of residential water filtration systems. However, most water filtration experts say that counter top filters or Point of Use filters are not the best choice for homes with substantial contamination issues. They mostly only affect color, taste and odors and lack effective filtration of contaminants such as bacteria, molds, viruses, etc.
Frequent filter replacements, wasted kitchen space (gets in the way of using the sink and faucet for other purposes) and lack of long-term durability make them an unattractive choice compared to Point of Entry or Whole Home Water Treatment Systems, especially if someone is looking for a more permanent residential purification system that will be out of sight while doing its job. Most Point-of-Use Systems are Reverse Osmosis Systems.
POE-Systems:
Point-of-Entry systems or Whole House Water Treatment systems are designed for the entire home, including every faucet and shower head both inside and outside the home. These systems treat all water entering the home and are installed at the point where the main water source enters the house, apartment or office. The incoming water is processed through multimedia filters which remove sub-micron particles, bacteria, cysts and unwanted chemicals by using active filtering media, usually carbon or other water filter systems.
A Point-of-Entry System, or Whole Home System, provides the home with an unlimited supply of safe water from every faucet and effectively and efficiently removes all known water pollution and contaminants. The system requires no backwashing, the maintenance is at lowest cost (filter change usually once a year) and it is perfect if the water source is well water (people using water from a private well, spring, or surface source often require Point-of-Entry water treatment). Above that, it helps prevent corrosion of plumbing and piping (which means no more staining of bathroom fixtures or laundry). It even can be used for business and other commercial buildings. Point-of-Entry Systems return water to a pure & pH neutral state.
In case there are existing Point-of-Use filter water systems in place, the need for a Whole Home Water System is not eliminated. Point-of-Use Systems will be much more effective if they start with clean, pure water that Whole Home systems provide. Point-of-Entry Systems will even enhance the performance of all Point-of-Use Systems.
