How does Ionized Water work?

Ionized Water, or alkaline water, lacks negatively charged anions, resulting in a highly alkaline effect on your body while neutralizing harmful acids. Because it is actively “seeking” to neutralize acidic anions, this water is also called Activated Water.

At the same time, the electrical charges inside the water, the Oxidation-Reduction-Potential (ORP), change. While measuring the electrical charges of certain kinds of water it becomes apparent that positive values (+mV) have an acidic, oxidizing effect (e.g. metal corrodes), and negative values (-mV) or redox values have an alkaline (acid reducing) effect on your body. Following list illustrates that:

Tap Water: +600mV
Bottled Water: +300mV
Spring Water: +150mV
Alkaline Ionized Water: -150mV to -700mV (depending on device and method)

The Ionizing Process inside a Water Ionizer

A Water Ionizer produces ionized water – it contains an electrolysis cell, in which tap water will be “ionized” with the help of electricity. In this way the water gets new properties, which are measurable in mV. The electrolysis cell is the most important part of a water ionizer and typically consists of three parts – two electrodes and one dividing membrane. The manufacturing process of the electrodes is both intensive in time and costs; they have to be made of a certain material which is long-lasting on the one hand, and reliable in not releasing any materials on the other.

Water Ionizers produce two kinds of water: at the cathode they produce alkaline ionized water (catholyte); and at the anode acidic, oxidizing water (anolyte). These two fluids have differing concentrations, therefore also differing redox potentials. The ionized alkaline water is high in pH and is usually used for drinking. The oxidizing acid water usually is used externally.
