Drinking Water Regulations

There are several existing Drinking Water Regulations in the US, and especially the Safe Drinking Water Act and its Amendments has imposed a large number of new regulations on the U.S. drinking water industry. These rules and regulations will require monitoring for microorganisms such as giardia, cryptosporidium, viruses, microbiological contaminants and chemicals; also included in these rules will be monitoring requirements for disinfection by-products and evaluation of contaminant removal technologies.

National Primary Drinking Water Regulations (NPDWRs or primary standards) are legally enforceable standards and they apply to public water systems. National Primary Drinking Water Regulations protect public health by limiting the levels of contaminants in drinking water.

Despite the existing regulations regarding safe and pure drinking water, water experts have documented an indifference to the regulations. A recent evaluation of nine Midwest states found out that up to half of the private wells contain contaminants that exceed federal safety standards.

The Safe Drinking Water Act states which potentially harmful substances must be monitored. Nevertheless, it leaves it to the single states to enforce its rules. That’s why state and local governments vary in their abilities and willingness to protect groundwater and drinking water!

In a report, the General Accounting Office of Congress (GAO) found EPA ground water protection programs ineffective. The GAO found that the EPA wasn't gathering enough information from states to protect areas prone to pesticide contamination.
